The Ultimate Pre-Care Guide by Sally Mustang (Cape Town & Johannesburg)
Getting a tattoo is exciting - but how you prepare beforehand can seriously impact your experience, your comfort, and your healing.
At Sally Mustang, we want you to feel calm, confident, and fully prepared when you walk into our studio. So here’s your complete pre-tattoo checklist - from the night before to what to bring on the day.
Save this. Share it. Send it to your bestie. 🖤
⸻
1,
The Week Before Your Tattoo
✔ Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Hydrated skin takes ink better and heals more smoothly.
✔ Moisturise (But Don’t Overdo It)
Keep your skin healthy with a light, fragrance-free moisturiser. Avoid anything heavily perfumed or exfoliating.
✔ Avoid Sunburn
This is important.
Sunburned skin cannot be tattooed. If your skin is red, peeling or damaged, we may need to reschedule.
✔ Avoid Heavy Alcohol & Partying
Alcohol thins the blood and can increase bleeding during your session, which affects ink saturation and healing.
⸻
2, The Night Before Your Tattoo
✔ Get a Proper Night’s Sleep
Being well rested helps your pain tolerance and overall experience.
✔ Eat a Balanced Meal
Your body will need energy the next day. Think protein + carbs.
✔ Shave?
If your artist has not instructed you to shave, please don’t. We will prep the area professionally in studio to avoid irritation.
⸻
3, The Morning of Your Appointment
✔ Eat Breakfast (Non-Negotiable)
Low blood sugar = dizziness and nausea. Even if you’re nervous, eat something light but substantial.
✔ Shower & Wear Clean Clothing
Clean skin reduces risk of infection. Please avoid applying lotion, oils or fake tan to the tattoo area.
✔ Wear the Right Outfit
This is underrated but important:
• Getting a thigh tattoo? Wear loose shorts or a skirt.
• Rib tattoo? Wear something easy to lift.
• Back tattoo? Avoid tight bras.
• Ankle tattoo? Loose pants or slides.
Think comfort. Think access. Think stain-safe.
⸻
4, What To Bring With You
Here’s your Sally Mustang Tattoo Day Packing List:
• ✔ Your ID (if required)
• ✔ A bottle of water
• ✔ Snacks (especially for longer sessions)
• ✔ Headphones (if you want to zone out)
• ✔ A jacket or hoodie (tattoo studios can get chilly)
• ✔ Entertainment for long sessions (book, iPad, playlist)
For bigger pieces, we always recommend bringing sugary snacks just in case your blood sugar dips.
⸻
5, What NOT To Do Before a Tattoo
❌ Don’t drink alcohol the night before
❌ Don’t take blood-thinning medication unless prescribed (and discuss with us first)
❌ Don’t arrive hungover
❌ Don’t fake tan the area
❌ Don’t come on an empty stomach
⸻
Bonus: Nervous First Timer?
Totally normal.
At Sally Mustang, we offer free consultations at both our Cape Town and Johannesburg studios. If you’re feeling unsure, book a consult and we’ll walk you through everything step by step.
Our studios are hygienic, welcoming and professional - your comfort and safety always come first.
