The Healing Guide by Sally Mustang (Cape Town & Johannesburg)
Your tattoo is finished - and it looks amazing.
But what you do after you leave the studio is just as important as the tattoo session itself.
Proper aftercare helps your tattoo heal cleanly, retain its colour, and stay sharp for years to come.
At Sally Mustang, we guide every client through the healing process so your tattoo settles beautifully.
Here’s exactly what to do after your appointment and during the following days.
Save this guide for later - you’ll definitely want to refer back to it.
⸻
Leave the Bandage On for the Recommended Time
Your artist will cover your tattoo with a protective bandage or wrap before you leave the studio.
This protects the fresh tattoo from bacteria and irritation.
In most cases:
✔ Leave the bandage on for 2–4 hours
✔ If using a second skin bandage, follow your artist’s instructions
Once you remove the bandage, your tattoo is ready for its first clean.
⸻
Gently Wash Your Tattoo
Your first wash is important.
Use clean hands and lukewarm water to gently clean the tattoo.
✔ Use a mild, fragrance-free soap
✔ Gently remove any excess ink, plasma, or ointment
✔ Pat dry with a clean paper towel
Avoid:
❌ Scrubbing
❌ Using washcloths or sponges
❌ Hot water
Your tattoo should feel clean but not irritated.
⸻
Apply a Light Layer of Aftercare Cream
Once your tattoo is clean and dry, apply a very thin layer of tattoo aftercare cream.
Less is more.
✔ Apply a small amount
✔ Spread it lightly across the tattoo
✔ Let the skin breathe
Too much ointment can trap moisture and slow healing, so keep it minimal.
Repeat this process 2–3 times per day during the healing phase.
⸻
Expect Peeling & Light Scabbing
Around day 3–5, your tattoo may begin to:
* Peel slightly
* Feel itchy
* Develop light scabbing
This is completely normal.
It means your skin is healing.
Very important:
❌ Do not scratch
❌ Do not pick scabs
❌ Do not peel the skin
Picking can pull ink out of the skin and affect the final result.
Let the tattoo heal naturally.
⸻
Avoid These While Your Tattoo Heals
For about 2 weeks, avoid activities that may irritate your tattoo.
Avoid:
❌ Swimming pools
❌ Ocean water
❌ Baths or hot tubs
❌ Direct sun exposure
❌ Heavy sweating on the area
❌ Tight clothing rubbing the tattoo
Showers are perfectly fine - just keep them short and gentle.
⸻
Keep Your Tattoo Clean & Moisturised
During the healing period:
✔ Wash your tattoo once or twice daily
✔ Apply a light layer of aftercare cream
✔ Keep the area clean and dry
Hydrated skin heals faster and helps keep the tattoo looking vibrant and crisp.
⸻
Protect Your Tattoo From the Sun
Once your tattoo has healed, sun protection becomes very important.
UV exposure can fade tattoos over time.
Once healed:
✔ Use a high SPF sunscreen
✔ Avoid prolonged sun exposure
This helps your tattoo stay sharp and beautiful for years.
⸻
How Long Does Healing Take?
Most tattoos heal on the surface in about:
10–14 days
However, the deeper layers of skin continue healing for 3–4 weeks.
During this time, continue treating your tattoo gently.
⸻
Signs Your Tattoo Is Healing Well
A healthy healing tattoo usually:
✔ Peels lightly
✔ Feels slightly itchy
✔ Looks a little dull before the colour settles
This is completely normal.
Your tattoo will regain its vibrancy once healing is complete.
