The Biggest Tattoo Myths We Hear Every Day (And the Truth Behind Them)

There are plenty of tattoo myths that have been passed around for years. Some are harmless, while others can make people unnecessarily nervous about getting their first tattoo.

At Sally Mustang, we believe that an informed client is a confident client. So we’re breaking down some of the most common misconceptions we hear in the studio and sharing what actually happens.

Myth #1: “Tattoos stretch immediately if you gain or lose weight.”

The truth: Not usually.

Your skin is incredibly resilient. Small, gradual changes in weight rarely have a noticeable effect on a tattoo. Most tattoos continue to look fantastic for many years, even as your body naturally changes.

Significant weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or rapid muscle growth can alter the appearance of a tattoo over time, but this tends to happen gradually rather than overnight.

Choosing an experienced artist who understands how tattoos flow with the body also helps ensure your tattoo ages beautifully.

Myth #2: “You can’t donate blood if you have tattoos.”

The truth: In most cases, you absolutely can.

Many people believe getting a tattoo means they’ll never be able to donate blood again, but that’s simply not true.

The only requirement is that you wait the recommended healing period before donating. This waiting period exists to ensure your skin has healed completely and to protect both you and the blood supply.

Donation guidelines vary slightly depending on your country and local blood donation service, so it’s always worth checking their latest recommendations.

Having tattoos does not permanently prevent you from becoming a blood donor.

Myth #3: “Colour tattoos hurt more than black tattoos.”

The truth: The colour isn’t what changes the pain.

Pain is influenced far more by:

* Where the tattoo is placed.

* How long you’re being tattooed.

* Your individual pain tolerance.

* Whether the area requires multiple passes.

Adding colour often means the artist spends more time working on the same section of skin, which can make the later stages of the appointment feel more uncomfortable. This isn’t because of the pigment itself. It’s because the skin has already been worked.

The ink colour doesn’t determine how much a tattoo hurts.

Myth #4: “Small tattoos are always inexpensive.”

The truth: Size is only one part of pricing.

One of the most common surprises for first-time clients is learning that a tiny tattoo isn’t necessarily a cheap tattoo.

Pricing depends on many factors, including:

* The complexity of the design.

* The level of detail.

* Placement on the body.

* Time required.

* The artist’s experience.

* Custom artwork and preparation.

* Professional equipment and sterile supplies.

A tiny, highly detailed fine line tattoo may require exceptional precision and concentration, even if it only takes a short amount of time.

When you invest in a tattoo, you’re investing in the artist’s years of experience, creativity, hygiene standards and craftsmanship, not simply the number of square centimetres of ink.

Myth #5: “You can’t tattoo over scars.”

The truth: Often you can, but every scar is different.

Many scars can be tattooed successfully, helping people reclaim confidence and tell a new story through their skin.

However, several factors need to be considered, including:

* The age of the scar.

* Whether it’s fully healed.

* The type of scar.

* Skin texture.

* Location on the body.

Most artists recommend waiting at least 12 to 18 months after a scar forms before considering tattooing over it, although every case is unique.

A consultation allows your artist to assess the scar and recommend the safest, most effective approach.

Myth #6: “Fine line tattoos disappear after a year.”

The truth: High-quality fine line tattoos can last beautifully.

Fine line tattoos have become incredibly popular, but they’ve also attracted a lot of misinformation.

A professionally applied fine line tattoo shouldn’t simply disappear.

Like every tattoo, it will naturally soften and mature over time as your skin ages, but good technique, proper ink saturation and thoughtful placement make an enormous difference.

Areas that experience constant friction or sun exposure may fade faster than others, which is why your artist will often recommend placements that suit the style you’re choosing.

Following good aftercare, protecting your tattoo from excessive sun exposure, and moisturising your skin all help maintain crisp, beautiful results for years to come.

Myth #7: “You have to be completely fearless to get tattooed.”

The truth: Almost everyone gets nervous.

Whether it’s your first tattoo or your fiftieth, feeling nervous is completely normal.

Our artists work with first-time clients every day. We’ll guide you through the process, answer your questions, explain what’s happening, and make sure you feel comfortable from consultation to aftercare.

The goal isn’t to be fearless. The goal is to feel informed and supported.

The Bottom Line

The internet is full of tattoo advice, but not all of it is accurate.

If you’re ever unsure about something you’ve heard, ask your artist. We’d much rather answer your questions than have you make decisions based on outdated myths or misinformation.

At Sally Mustang, we believe great tattoos begin with trust, education and honest conversations.
